Residents and commuters passing through key corridors in Surulere have been navigating in complete darkness for close to a month after a series of street lights along Ogunlana Drive and its adjoining streets stopped functioning. Community members say the blackout began after a transformer fault and has not been addressed since. The situation has reportedly emboldened criminal activity, with three residents independently reporting instances of robbery and snatching during the evening hours that they believe are linked to the poor lighting. A local mechanic who works along the road said he now closes his workshop before 6 PM out of safety concerns. The LGA infrastructure office has acknowledged the fault but has not given a timeline for repairs. Residents are urging the Lagos State Electricity Board and the LGA to coordinate urgently to restore lighting before more incidents are recorded.
