Short Description

Families along the Ojo coastline have lost portions of their land and in some cases their homes to ongoing coastal erosion.

Details

Several families living along the coastal edge of Ojo LGA have reported losing significant portions of their land and in a few cases entire structures to the relentless coastal erosion that has been eating into the shoreline for years. One family says their compound, which once extended 40 metres from the main building to the water’s edge, now sits less than 8 metres from the advancing waterline. During the last season of heavy rainfall and elevated tides, a residential building belonging to a retired schoolteacher collapsed entirely into the water. The affected families have formally written to the Ojo LGA, the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment, and the Federal Ministry of Works requesting emergency coastal protection works including the deployment of gabion baskets and revetments to halt the erosion. A community welfare association has opened a relief fund for families who have been displaced and lost property.
