Residents living in densely packed sections of the Ikeja Government Reserved Area are reporting a noticeable increase in complaints related to generator fumes, including persistent headaches, difficulty breathing, and one reported case of suspected carbon monoxide poisoning that required hospitalisation. The problem has been exacerbated by prolonged periods of grid power outage, forcing nearly every household and business to run generators around the clock. Community health advocates say that in a neighbourhood with high building density and limited natural ventilation, the cumulative effect of dozens of generators running simultaneously poses a serious health hazard. One family has reportedly begun sleeping in rotation so that someone is always awake to monitor for fume build-up. Residents are calling on the Ikeja Electric Distribution Company to improve grid supply reliability and on the LGA health office to issue a public advisory on safe generator use and placement.
