Short Description

Flooding from recent heavy rains has submerged farmland in parts of Epe, leaving smallholder farmers counting devastating losses.

Details

Smallholder farmers in the low-lying agricultural zones around Epe LGA are facing devastating losses after floodwaters inundated large expanses of cultivated farmland following several days of intense rainfall. Crops including cassava, vegetables, and maize that were weeks away from harvest have been destroyed by the inundation. A farmer who works a two-hectare plot near the creek bank said everything he invested this season is gone and he does not know how he will recover. Community farm cooperative leaders estimate that hundreds of farmers across several villages have been affected and that the total crop loss runs into millions of naira. The flooding has also damaged access paths to farms, making it difficult for farmers to even assess the full extent of losses. Agricultural extension officers have been asked to conduct a damage assessment for submission to the state government in support of a compensation or input support programme.
