Short Description

Residents of communities near the Lekki Free Trade Zone are complaining about health effects from persistent construction dust.

Details

Communities located near the Lekki Free Trade Zone and associated mega-infrastructure projects in Ibeju-Lekki LGA are raising urgent health concerns over the persistent heavy dust generated by ongoing construction activities. Residents in several villages say their homes, farms, and wells are continuously coated in fine construction dust, and that respiratory complaints including coughing, eye irritation, and worsening asthma among children have increased significantly in the past year. A community health volunteer said she had recorded over thirty cases of respiratory complaints in one community in the past two months alone. Environmental groups say the construction operators are not adequately implementing dust suppression measures required under their environmental management plans. The Ibeju-Lekki LGA environment desk and the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency have been formally petitioned. Residents are calling for immediate enforcement of dust control standards and a health survey of affected communities.
