Short Description

Pedestrians on Allen Avenue in Ikeja are navigating dangerous broken pavements that have caused multiple falls and injuries.

Details

Workers, traders, and pedestrians who frequent Allen Avenue, one of Ikeja’s busiest commercial corridors, are calling for urgent repairs to the pedestrian walkways along the street, which have deteriorated into a dangerous patchwork of broken slabs, exposed rebar, open pits, and uneven surfaces. Several pedestrians say they have sustained injuries from falls on the damaged walkway, and a woman in her sixties described being hospitalised after tripping on a raised concrete edge during an evening walk. Business owners along the strip say the state of the pavement is an embarrassment for what is meant to be a major commercial and diplomatic area in Lagos. The Ikeja LGA public infrastructure office has been petitioned by the traders’ association and the residents’ forum. The petition asks for a comprehensive pavement replacement exercise as well as regular maintenance going forward. A similar petition was submitted in 2021 with no results, residents note.
