Short Description

Hundreds of traders in Agege are protesting after government officials demolished market stalls without prior warning.

Details

Chaos erupted at the Agege main market on Thursday morning when officials accompanied by security personnel moved in to demolish a section of traders’ stalls, reportedly as part of a market reorganisation exercise. Traders say they were given no prior notice and had no time to remove their goods before the demolition began. Several traders lost significant stock including perishable goods, electronics, and clothing. A woman who sells provisions said her entire shop was brought down with her goods still inside. Angry traders blocked the road leading to the market for several hours, causing traffic disruption across the area. Market union leaders held an emergency meeting and have issued a seven-day ultimatum to the LGA to provide compensation and halt further demolitions pending proper consultation. The LGA has not issued an official statement as of the time of this report. State government officials have been asked to intervene.
