Short Description

A community library in Shomolu that had been shut for two years has been renovated and reopened thanks to a local NGO.

Details

The Shomolu Community Library, which had been closed for over two years due to a deteriorating roof and general disrepair, has been fully renovated and reopened to the public following an intervention by a Lagos-based literacy and community development NGO working in partnership with the LGA and a private donor. The renovated facility now features a repaired roof, fresh paintwork, new bookshelves stocked with donated books, a children’s reading corner, a small digital resource area with four internet-connected computers, and improved ventilation and lighting throughout. The library officially reopened last Saturday to an enthusiastic turnout from community members, particularly students and children. The NGO’s executive director said the library is intended to serve as a community knowledge hub and will offer after-school reading programmes, homework support sessions, and digital literacy classes on a weekly basis. The LGA has committed to covering the facility’s running costs going forward.
