Short Description

Community members in Bariga have formed a structured neighbourhood watch group following a spike in home burglaries.

Details

Residents of several streets in the Bariga area of Shomolu LGA have come together to form a structured neighbourhood watch group after a noticeable increase in residential burglaries and theft incidents over the past two months. The group, which currently has over 60 active members drawn from across eight streets, operates a nighttime patrol roster and a community alert messaging system. The initiative was triggered after five homes on adjoining streets were burgled within a single week, with thieves targeting electronics, cash, and valuables. The neighbourhood watch has already helped prevent one incident where a lookout member alerted police to suspicious individuals casing properties, leading to the detention of two suspects. The group has requested formal recognition and logistical support from the Shomolu LGA and the police divisional headquarters. Police have commended the initiative and have assigned a community liaison officer to coordinate with the group.
