The traffic situation around the Oshodi Underbridge corridor continues to be one of the most challenging transport pinch points in Lagos, with commuters describing scenes of near-total gridlock during morning and evening peak hours that can trap vehicles for up to three hours on a routine weekday. Despite various interventions over the years including the deployment of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority officials, the introduction of bus terminals, and attempts to reorganise commercial motor parks, residents and commuters say the fundamental problem of too many vehicles converging on too few road arteries remains unresolved. Market activities that spill onto approach roads, the operation of informal motor parks on carriageways, and the mixing of heavy goods vehicles with commuter traffic are among the factors cited by transport analysts. A coordinated spatial reorganisation plan for the Oshodi transit hub has been in discussion for years but implementation has been slow.
