Short Description

Residents near an illegal quarrying operation in Ojo say blasting activities are cracking walls and endangering homes.

Details

Residents living near an illegal quarrying site on the outskirts of the Ojo community are raising urgent safety concerns after blasting activities associated with the quarry operation have begun causing visible cracks in walls of residential buildings in the vicinity. At least fifteen households have documented structural damage that appeared or worsened after blasting activities at the site intensified in recent months. A family whose home has developed a large crack running across the main wall says they are afraid to sleep inside. The quarrying operation does not appear to have the required permits from the Lagos State Minerals Resources and Environmental Management Committee, according to inquiries by community advocates. The LGA and the state environment ministry have been formally notified. Community leaders are calling for an immediate stop-work order pending a safety and environmental impact assessment. The operator of the quarry has not responded to community requests for a meeting.
