Residents in a particularly affected neighbourhood of Mushin LGA are living under a cloud of fear after a weekend of cult-related violence that left two young men injured and sent families running indoors for safety. Eyewitnesses describe a series of running confrontations between rival groups beginning on Saturday evening that lasted intermittently into Sunday morning. A stray bullet shattered the window of a roadside kiosk and a motorcyclist was attacked and robbed during the confusion. Parents of school-age children in the area say they kept their children home on Monday out of fear that violence might resume. The police have made two arrests in connection with the incidents and say additional officers have been deployed to the area. Community leaders are calling for a sustained security presence and for the revival of a community-police dialogue programme that had been active several years ago but was allowed to lapse.
