Short Description

Residents and students in Yaba are pressing for a pedestrian overpass after multiple road crossing fatalities on a major expressway.

Details

Residents of Yaba, particularly students and workers who cross the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway feeder roads on foot, are intensifying calls for the construction of a pedestrian overpass following at least three fatal road crossing accidents in the area over the past six months. Community advocates say the high volume and speed of traffic on the expressway makes street-level crossing inherently dangerous, yet thousands of pedestrians cross daily due to the absence of an overhead structure. A secondary school student was among the fatalities recorded, a loss that galvanised community sentiment and prompted the local parent-teacher association to join the campaign. The Lagos Mainland LGA and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority have received formal petitions from no fewer than four community groups. The Federal Roads Maintenance Agency, which has jurisdiction over the expressway, has also been contacted. No official response committing to any construction timeline has been received.
