Thousands of traders operating in and around the Idumota market complex on Lagos Island are in a state of anxiety following the circulation of a state government notice indicating that sections of the market may be demolished to create space for a road expansion and traffic management project. The notice, which traders say arrived with little prior warning, has prompted an emergency meeting of the Idumota Market Traders Association and sparked protests along the market perimeter. Traders are demanding a formal dialogue with the Lagos State Ministry of Works and the LGA before any demolition proceeds. A senior official of the traders’ association said they are not opposed to development in principle but insist on adequate notice, transparent consultation, and a concrete resettlement plan before they vacate any stalls. The state government has not publicly responded to the traders’ statement. Legal aid organisations have offered to assist the association in seeking an interim court order if necessary.
