Residents of the Ketu community in Kosofe LGA are demanding a comprehensive infrastructure audit from Ikeja Electric Distribution Company after a power transformer serving a key section of the community exploded last Thursday evening for the third time this year. The blast, which occurred around 7:30 PM, caused widespread panic and plunged thousands of homes into darkness. A fire that started as a result of the explosion was quickly contained by residents using extinguishers before the Lagos State Fire Service arrived. No casualties were reported but a garden wall near the transformer was damaged. Residents are furious, with many pointing out that the transformer had been reported as overloaded and poorly maintained months before the first explosion. The community development association has written a strongly worded petition to Ikeja Electric and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission demanding that the faulty infrastructure be replaced rather than repeatedly patched.
