Waterfront communities in Ikorodu LGA are making urgent appeals for government intervention ahead of what meteorologists are predicting will be a severe rainy season. Residents of low-lying neighbourhoods near the Ikorodu creek say they have been experiencing gradual flooding even before the peak rains and fear a repeat or worsening of the devastating floods that submerged homes, destroyed property, and displaced hundreds of families in previous years. Community associations from four affected neighbourhoods held a joint press briefing last week to draw attention to their situation. Key demands include the dredging of clogged drainage channels, the installation of flood barriers at critical points, and the pre-positioning of emergency response materials. The Ikorodu LGA chairman has been formally notified and state government disaster management officials have been copied on the communities’ letter. The National Emergency Management Agency has been asked to conduct a pre-emptive vulnerability assessment of the area.
