Short Description

Residents of a community in Ifako-Ijaiye are pooling resources to repair a badly damaged access road after years of government inaction.

Details

Frustrated by years of unanswered requests to the LGA for road repairs, residents of a community in the Ijaiye-Ojokoro area of Ifako-Ijaiye LGA have come together to raise funds independently for the rehabilitation of their badly damaged main access road. The road, which serves as the primary route in and out of the community, has been riddled with deep potholes and exposed gullies for several years following the failure of a previous patch repair. Over 200 households contributed cash towards hiring a contractor, procuring gravel and laterite, and engaging local labour. Work began last weekend and residents came out in large numbers to participate directly in clearing and levelling activities. A community leader who coordinated the effort said they had written to the LGA eight times over four years without a single response. While celebrating their self-help initiative, residents have also asked the government to take note and step in for a permanent asphalt overlay.
