Environmental activists and health advocates are raising fresh concerns about the air quality in Apapa following complaints from residents about persistent fumes, smoke, and chemical odours emanating from the industrial and port zones. Residents of communities closest to the port and heavy industrial facilities say respiratory complaints have increased noticeably, with children and elderly residents most severely affected. One resident described chronic coughing and eye irritation among her children that began after their family moved to the area two years ago. An environmental monitoring exercise conducted by a civil society organisation recently recorded particulate matter and sulphur dioxide levels that the group says exceed safe thresholds. The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency has been formally notified and has been asked to conduct its own independent measurements. Residents are calling for mandatory environmental impact assessments and stricter emission controls on the industrial operators in the zone.
