Short Description

Illegal dumping and industrial waste discharge are severely polluting the waterways running through Amuwo-Odofin.

Details

Environmental advocates and community members in Amuwo-Odofin LGA are raising serious concerns about the accelerating degradation of the creek and waterway networks in the area, which they say are being choked by a combination of domestic waste dumping, illegal sand excavation, and discharge from nearby small-scale industrial operations. Residents who fish in these waterways say the catch has declined dramatically over the past two years and that the water has taken on a strong chemical odour in certain sections. A community environmental group conducted a survey last month and documented over fifteen points along the waterway where illegal waste discharge was occurring. The group has submitted its findings to the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency. Residents are calling for enforcement action against businesses discharging waste into the waterways and for the installation of waste containment infrastructure along the creek banks.
