Short Description

Raw sewage is overflowing onto streets in a densely populated part of Ajegunle after a sewage line collapsed weeks ago.

Details

Residents of a densely populated neighbourhood in Ajegunle are living with raw sewage overflowing onto their streets and into yards following the collapse of a main sewage line over three weeks ago. The situation, which began after heavy rains weakened an already ageing underground pipe, has created a severe public health hazard. The smell is described as unbearable, and children have been warned not to play outside. A local nurse who lives in the area warned that conditions were ripe for an outbreak of waterborne diseases if the situation was not urgently addressed. The Ajeromi-Ifelodun LGA office has been notified multiple times by the community association but has so far only sent officials to inspect without deploying any repair crew. Residents are calling on the Lagos State Waterworks and the LGA to treat the situation as the public health emergency it is and deploy crews immediately.
