Two residents sustained injuries on Monday morning after a makeshift wooden bridge constructed over a drainage canal on a busy pedestrian route in the Shasha area of Alimosho collapsed under the weight of foot traffic. One of the injured, a woman in her forties, was taken to a nearby clinic with a fractured wrist after falling into the shallow canal below. The second victim, a teenage boy, sustained cuts and bruising. The bridge, which had been constructed informally by community members several years ago to replace a collapsed government-built structure, had been showing signs of deterioration in recent months. Community members say they had flagged the bridge’s condition to the LGA office without receiving any response. Following the incident, residents have barricaded both ends of the bridge and are now using an alternate route that adds significant walking distance. The LGA has been formally notified and residents are demanding an urgent permanent replacement.
